What's Wrong with the Grammy Awards 2014?

Like most of you, I too stopped watching "My 600lb Life" on TLC in order to catch The Grammy Awards last Sunday (but only because the networks were only airing reruns of better shows). You see, every year, I am as giddy as Scooby Doo when he sees Scooby Snacks when it comes to awards ceremonies. I love EVERYTHING about them from the much too hyped Red Carpet, to the tired (and awkward) presenter speeches, to the oh-so selfish thank you speeches of those who win.

Of course when it comes to entertainment, it's all about the E.G.O.T. or the holy quadruplet of entertainment excellence: The Emmy (TV), Grammy (music), Oscar (film), and Tony (stage). To win one of these is supposed to be the goal of a lifetime because while a giant surf board from Teen Choice and a spaceman from MTV may be cool on the shelf, they aren't printed on DVD or CD covers to drive sales, nor do they get you more room in the "in memorium section" when you die. All four of the big ceremonies are tediously long affairs but for good reason, they are incredible achievements. You may not care who wins Best Documentary short at the Oscars, but THAT's THE POINT! They make you watch it so that it GETS SEEN! So that true excellence is made visible when it might not have been. When the networks started broadcasting these lavish affairs, they had to start changing the ceremonies into ratings hits, and although the Emmy's, Tony's, and Oscars remain pretty in tact, the Grammy's have strayed into completely ridiculous territory.

In it's three and a half hour time slot, only 10 out of 82 awards were given out while the public tuned in. That equated to one award about every 20-30 minutes... Instead, LL Cool J opened the show claiming that the Grammy's was a place for pop culture moments to happen... really? If I want pop spectacle, I'll turn on the VMA's! Not to mention nearly every song performed on Sunday had already been performed NUMEROUS times all over TV nearly a year ago. You might as well call the Grammy's an end-of-the year concert of songs you are probably tired of already. Now I'm not evil, I loved Beyonce and guffawed at Pink's aerial performance, and Taylor Swift had me in tears but what's the point??? If the Grammy is so important, why don't we get to see it? Who decides who gets air time and who doesn't, and where's the joy of rooting for your favorite if most news sources won't even print the whole winner's list (give it a try? I dare you, it was hard for me to find outside the Grammy's website).

Of course, I was in love with the on air marriage tribute to "Same Love" (but whoever let Madonna ruin it should be punched). I also would have loved to see Michael Buble win for Best Traditional Pop Vocal, or Zedd's "Clarity: win Best Dance Recording, BUT I WASN'T SHOWN IT!

I am by no means, arguing that the music should be cut and that Best Album Notes should be front and center, but oh my gosh... do SOMETHING. It's a ceremony that didn't award a single non-mainstream genre (reggae, world, latin?) I'd LOVE to see the recipient of the best Spoken Word album or a performance that introduces me to it... SO MANY MISSED OPPORTUNITIES. Where do you draw the line between ratings and artistry? Scoff at me if you want, but one hour in and 2 awards down, I was looking up the premiere date and host for Nickelodeon's Kid's Choice Awards, because at least they give you what you come for.

Critics' Choice Awards: The Winners

UPDATED: "12 Years a Slave" takes best picture while "Gravity" helmer Alfonso Cuaron wins best director and Matthew McConaughey and Cate Blanchett take top acting awards.

The 19th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards just concluded, with 12 Years a Slave nabbing the top prize of best picture. 12 Years a Slave's Lupita Nyong'o also won best supporting actress and the film's screenwriter John Ridley won best adapted screenplay. Going into the show, the Fox Searchlight film had 13 nominations.

American Hustle also had 13 nominations and won the following awards: best acting ensemble, best makeup, best comedy and best actress in a comedy (Amy Adams).

Matthew McConaughey and Cate Blanchett won best actor and best actress for their respective roles in Dallas Buyers Club and Blue Jasmine, while McConaughey's co-star Jared Leto won the best supporting actor prize.

Best director went to Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity, which won seven awards, the most of any nominated film, including best actress in an action movie (Sandra Bullock), best cinematography, best editing, best visual effects, best sci-fi/horror movie and best score.

Three special awards were presented: the Joel Siegel Award, which went to Forest Whitaker; the Louis XIII Genius Award, which went to Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater for theBefore Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight trilogy; and Hottest Hollywood Star, which went toBenedict Cumberbatch.

The awards ceremony aired live on the east coast on The CW from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and was hosted by Aisha Tyler.

2014 Oscar Nominations

"American Hustle" and "Gravity" stole the show this morning as both blockbuster films were nominated for 10 Oscars with "12 Years a Slave" right behind at nine nominations. The surprise of the day came from "Nebraska," a film that nabbed six Oscar nods. "Dallas Buyers Club" and "Captain Phillips" also got six.

The stars dominated the individual nominations as expected with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matthew McConaughey all making the cut for Best Actor, while Amy Adams, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep were all nominated for Best Actress.

For Best Picture, all the big names made it in as well, including "American Hustle," "12 Years a Slave," "The Wolf of Wall Street," and "Gravity."

Golden Globes 2014 - Winners

Golden Globe Awards: And the winners are...

12 Years a Slave, nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards, narrowly avoided getting shut out when it took home the night’s final and biggest prize for Best Drama. Steve McQueen’s period slave drama looked to be out of favor with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, with Gravity‘s Alfonso Cuaron winning for Best Director, Her‘s Spike Jonze winning for Best Screenplay, and the Dallas Buyers Club duo of Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto winning the acting awards. But when Johnny Depp announced the big prize, 12 Years a Slave came out on top.

In the Comedy category, American Hustle won Best Picture, while Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence won acting trophies. Leonardo DiCaprio took home Best Actor in a Comedy for The Wolf of Wall Street, his second career Globe after winning for The Aviator in 2005.

In the television categories, Breaking Bad and Bryan Cranston were honored for the AMC show’s final season. The HFPA expressed a great fondness for Saturday Night Live, awarding Globes’ co-host Amy Poehler the award for Best Actress in a Comedy, Andy Samberg the prize for Best Actor, and his new show Brooklyn Nine-Nine the honor of Best Comedy.
