The Primetime Emmy Awards 2014 - Nominations

Keepin' it Reel With
The Emmy's 2014

You know how every year the Emmy nominations roll around and everyone is angry that the best shows on HBO or now Netflix were snubbed? Well that's not the case this year! With 19 nominations this is definitely Game of Thrones' year to win after a stellar season. In fact, with these nominations, the new streaming networks have firmly secured their place as royalty in the TV landscape taking more nominations than their broadcast or cable brethren (Orange is the New Black landed 12 noms). Love for premium cable is all around with Masters of Sex, Silicon Valley, Girls, Shameless, and Homeland racking up nods. I'm excited because this HAS to be Cat Deely's year to win Best Reality Host. I am shocked by the complete snub of The Walking Dead and absolutely confused as to how The Normal Heart garnered 6 acting nods but no monition for best TV movie. But alas, the Emmy's never fail to stir up controversy.

If you want to maximize your time and be aware of the strongest contenders this season to win, catch up on these shows below:

HBO's Game of Thrones
HBO's True Detective

Netflix's Orange is the New Black
Netflix's House of Cards

         HBO's The Normal Heart
FX's American Horror Story: Coven

                                             FX's Fargo

Cancelled or Renewed? 2013-14 Season

Was your favorite show CANCELLED or RENEWED?

It's that time of year TV LOVERS! In May, all of TV gathers together for what the industry calls, "up fronts." Each network throws a party for the press where they announce what their schedules for the upcoming season look like, including which shows they are bringing back, and which new shows they have ordered. The up fronts begin on Monday so of course the networks had to finally announce which shows were getting canceled from the past season in order to tell  all about the new stuff. The following is the OFFICIAL and FINAL list of what has been cancelled and what has been renewed from the entire 2013-2014 class. It's a dog-eat-dog world in the business of network television.

Here's what I have to say... ABC WHY??????????? They literally canceled ALL of their new comedies except The Goldbergs. I am still depressed that Suburgatory, The Neighbors, Super Fun Night, and Trophy Wife are gone.... I can't.... I miss Reggie and Amber :.....( For CBS to cancel The Crazy Ones... that was a SHOCKER (Robin Williams cancelled... okay?) R.I.P. The Carrie Diaries and Community but I hope that DADS enjoys it's spot in TV hell for being AWEFUL.

Congrats to the above. It's really hard to survive past the first season on television and very few hits emerged last season. The Blacklist and Sleepy Hollow were the only breakout hits with the others that were renewed sticking it in middle ground. Good luck everyone! #GreysAnatomyForever

The Academy Awards 2014 - Winners

Keepin' it Reel with
THE OSCARS

It was one of the best Academy Awards in my memory. Ellen transported the Dolby Theater into a living room where she entertained Hollywood's A-list like a dinner party at her own house. It was funny, it was wild, and it was accessible. Never has an audience been able to connect with "that" world ever more so. Thanks to this year's original song nominees, there were beautiful performances galore and the focus on the "hero tribute" to movie characters helped ground the (many times uninclusive) Oscars to the rest of cinema's greats. All of the actors and even the song writers gave INCREDIBLE speeches below that you should check out and as deserved, 12 Years a Slave walked away with the grand award, Lupita the supporting, Her got a screenplay away, Dallas took the acting, and Gravity the technical, it was... perfect.

The Best Superbowl Commercials of 2014

Keepin' it Reel with
SUPER BOWL 2014

I LOVE the Super Bowl, but probably not for the reason that you do. The Super Bowl is the only day where I use my Tivo for the opposite reason why it exist: to skip all the football and just watch the commercials (how odd?) AND to order $40 worth of Domino's and eat Doritos and Velveeta till I want to puke. But since everyone is pretty upset over the Branco's including my father (poor daddy), maybe a top 10 Super Bowl commercial list will cheer everyone up!

10) Bud Light - It's just fun and ridiculous :)

9) Coca-Cola - Makes me proud and happy and all tingly all over.

8) Butterfinger Cups - One of the jaw dropping moments and surprises.

7) Budweiser - Who didn't have an "awe" moment?

6) H&M - Ummmmm David Beckham's body speaks for itself.

5) Chevrolet - This transcends car commercials and is instead just a beautiful human moment. This wins in my heart.

4) Hyundai - I had to watch this one three times, I loved it so much. When the kid almost impales himself on a brick! Made me want to find my dad and give him a hug.

3) Audi - It's the Super Bowl commercial that blows your mind. PLUS the addition of Sarah McClahklan (name spelled wrong) GOLD.

2) Turbo Tax - I don't even get football, but I LOVED this.

1) What is better than a reunion of the best show EVER. Gold the moment I saw Jerry and George reunite.

What's Wrong with the Grammy Awards 2014?

Keepin' it Reel with:

Like most of you, I too stopped watching "My 600lb Life" on TLC in order to catch The Grammy Awards last Sunday (but only because the networks were only airing reruns of better shows). You see, every year, I am as giddy as Scooby Doo when he sees Scooby Snacks when it comes to awards ceremonies. I love EVERYTHING about them from the much too hyped Red Carpet, to the tired (and awkward) presenter speeches, to the oh-so selfish thank you speeches of those who win.

Of course when it comes to entertainment, it's all about the E.G.O.T. or the holy quadruplet of entertainment excellence: The Emmy (TV), Grammy (music), Oscar (film), and Tony (stage). To win one of these is supposed to be the goal of a lifetime because while a giant surf board from Teen Choice and a spaceman from MTV may be cool on the shelf, they aren't printed on DVD or CD covers to drive sales, nor do they get you more room in the "in memorium section" when you die. All four of the big ceremonies are tediously long affairs but for good reason, they are incredible achievements. You may not care who wins Best Documentary short at the Oscars, but THAT's THE POINT! They make you watch it so that it GETS SEEN! So that true excellence is made visible when it might not have been. When the networks started broadcasting these lavish affairs, they had to start changing the ceremonies into ratings hits, and although the Emmy's, Tony's, and Oscars remain pretty in tact, the Grammy's have strayed into completely ridiculous territory.

In it's three and a half hour time slot, only 10 out of 82 awards were given out while the public tuned in. That equated to one award about every 20-30 minutes... Instead, LL Cool J opened the show claiming that the Grammy's was a place for pop culture moments to happen... really? If I want pop spectacle, I'll turn on the VMA's! Not to mention nearly every song performed on Sunday had already been performed NUMEROUS times all over TV nearly a year ago. You might as well call the Grammy's an end-of-the year concert of songs you are probably tired of already. Now I'm not evil, I loved Beyonce and guffawed at Pink's aerial performance, and Taylor Swift had me in tears but what's the point??? If the Grammy is so important, why don't we get to see it? Who decides who gets air time and who doesn't, and where's the joy of rooting for your favorite if most news sources won't even print the whole winner's list (give it a try? I dare you, it was hard for me to find outside the Grammy's website).

Of course, I was in love with the on air marriage tribute to "Same Love" (but whoever let Madonna ruin it should be punched). I also would have loved to see Michael Buble win for Best Traditional Pop Vocal, or Zedd's "Clarity: win Best Dance Recording, BUT I WASN'T SHOWN IT!

I am by no means, arguing that the music should be cut and that Best Album Notes should be front and center, but oh my gosh... do SOMETHING. It's a ceremony that didn't award a single non-mainstream genre (reggae, world, latin?) I'd LOVE to see the recipient of the best Spoken Word album or a performance that introduces me to it... SO MANY MISSED OPPORTUNITIES. Where do you draw the line between ratings and artistry? Scoff at me if you want, but one hour in and 2 awards down, I was looking up the premiere date and host for Nickelodeon's Kid's Choice Awards, because at least they give you what you come for.
