"HOSTAGES"

Held against their will, with guns and dark secrets held against them, a family battles against a group of captors in order to save themselves and the President of the United States in the new CBS drama, “Hostages.”

Toni Collette stars as Dr. Ellen Sanders, the woman in charge of operating on the president. While the operation appears to be routine, a group of assassins steps in the way to complicate things. Led by Duncan Carlisle (Dylan McDermott) the assassins aim is to kill the president and plan on using Dr. Sanders to carry out the murder on the operating table. With their well-kept secrets now exposed, the family must cooperate or risk losing their lives.

The fast paced drama moves quickly from scene to scene, which is to be expected considering Jerry Bruckheimer is an executive producer on the show. Right from the beginning, the pilot lets the audience in on the dirty little secrets of each family member. What I like about the secrets though, is that they seem to be your average, ordinary secret. No one committed a murder or is running an underground dog-fighting ring. The secrets make the family seem that much more relatable.

The series takes a cue from ABC’s wildly successful “Scandal” with politics playing a key role in the events of the series. From the pilot episode, the audience is let in somewhat on who’s involved in the hostage/murder plan with key members of the president’s close group being among those responsible. Does the president know any of this is happening? Who is orchestrating the whole thing? I NEED TO KNOW.

Dylan McDermott’s character is an interesting one to analyze. His motives from the very beginning seem unclear and the audience sees life through his eyes – with a young daughter and a sick wife, I found it hard not to empathize with him. In the previews too, the audience sees him and Dr. Sanders kiss (dramaaaa!) and who doesn’t love a little love triangle (amirite Twilight fans?!) He clearly has good reasons to do what he’s doing and I can’t wait to find out they are.

While I’m unsure of how long the shelf life of this series will be since it reads like a two-hour long action packed feature film, I will definitely tune in every week to find out what happens to the Sanders family and Duncan Carlisle, the perfectly brooding villain of this series. This is going to be one for the live-tweet, y’all.
